Transnational Integration and Democracy Narratives: Dynamics in European Cooperation in Historical Perspective

My research project consists of two strands and an experimental element, which could hopefully help advance research about pathways and mechanisms of cooperation within and beyond Europe. The first strand builds on my own (past and ongoing) and other (published) research on European and global cooperation in long-term historical perspective. This research aims to identify vectors of continuity and change in such cooperation in historical perspective. The second strand builds on my current research and has a more clearly delineated empirical focus to generate in-depth data about what could be called shorter defining periods of controversial and partly transnational debate about the desirable character of European cooperation. This research seeks to connect in a fruitful manner my interests in transnational actors and integration and in narratives, or ways of telling stories about, new forms of ‘cooperative’ democracy developed to define and through emotive appeals, legitimize (or de-legitimize) European cooperation and integration. This strand will focus on the European Parliament as a platform for transnational cooperation, socialization and contestation among political parties and other societal actors debating the nature and rationale for the future development of the existing set of institutions. I also hope to advance research on the role of European societal actors in promoting and diffusing democracy, human rights, and regional cooperation and integration during the period from the 1960s through to the 1990s, which could involve an exploratory workshop to be organized in 2020.
