Fellowship

Professor Jan Aart Scholte joined Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research as a Senior Fellow. He conducted his research in Research Unit 3 “Global Governance Revisited” from November 2012 to March 2013.

Research Project at the Centre

Jan Aart Scholte’s work at the Centre involved “Explorations in Global Democracy”. In 2008–12, he has coordinated a major international project on 'Building Global Democracy', with a core grant from the Ford Foundation, together with co-conveners in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and the Pacific. The project has addressed subjects such as conceptualizing global democracy, learning for global democracy, greater inclusion in global politics, and structural redistribution for global democracy. Professor Scholte devoted considerable time of his stay at the Centre to finalizing several publications emanating from the Building Global Democracy project. He also completed several writings on civil society and global democracy.

In addition, Professor Scholte prepared a workshop that was held at the Centre in November 2013 on ‘Transcultural Constructions of Global Legitimacy’. Professor Scholte’s focus on transcultural exchange and the inclusion of perspectives on legitimacy and democracy from ten different world regions in the Building Global Democracy project provided crucial insights into how legitimacy is being conceived of and discussed in a growingly transcultural setting.
