Prof. Dr Gerald Chan will be conducting his research as a Senior Fellow within the framework of the joint fellowship programme 'Trans-border Cooperation in East Asia at the Regional/Global Interface' of the Institute of East-Asian Studies (IN-EAST) and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg/Centre for Global Cooperation Research from September 2017 to February 2018.

Research Project at the Centre

Silk Roads and Bullet Trains: Assessing China’s New Diplomacy

The project assesses the impact of China’s recently-launched ‘one belt, one road’ initiative on regional and global cooperation. In particular, it analyses the development of China’s diplomacy in high-speed rail that crosses borders, regions, and continents. The capability of the initiative to connect the world to promote economic growth and development will be evaluated. It is argued that a new form of development is emerging, a phenomenon which I term ‘geo-developmentalism’ or ‘geo-neo-functionalism’. Moreover, it shows that as a result of this ensuing regional and global cooperation, China is helping to nurture a new global order that presents both challenges to and opportunities for the world.
