Research Project at the Centre

Depoliticization or (Re-)Politicization? The 'Politics of Legitimacy' in European Security

The project aims at a critical reflection and a re-assessment of the wide-spread diagnoses of 'depoliticization' of security both at EU and Member State level. By analyzing different thematic fields of European security, the project poses the question whether or not forms of public disputes, contestation, protest and resistance or – to put in more general terms – processes of (re-)politicization can be observed which have been overlooked or underestimated by the mainstream of Critical Security Studies. It raises, therefore, the question in how far 'politics of legitimacy' affect the field of (European) security and how these politics are conducted by various actors at EU and national level. The overall hypothesis of the project reads as follows: European security politics is a coproduction of both attempts of 'depoliticization' as well as waves of 'politicization' (Politisierungsschübe).
