(Anti)Global Pasts & the Rise of Populist Storytelling

Workshop

6th - 7th July 2023
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (on invitation)

From the Brexit campaign’s appeal to ‘Take back control’ to Donald Trump’s call to ‘Make America Great Again’ and Putin’s assertion that Ukraine and Russia form ‘essentially the same historical and spiritual space’, populist, far-right and and religious leaders mobilize their supporters by creating a sense of history. In this workshop, we as what kind of histories and stories they tell, and how those stories become appealing translocally. In other words, how do politics of pasts such as commemorations and historiographies produce affectively charged narratives? At the same time, we suggest exploring how actors committed to projects of emancipation and justice can counter the appropriation of history by far right, populist and religious politics.
