The film programme “Voices in Transit: Non-fiction Films on Migration and Mobility” for the exhibition "Over/Looked: Visual Regimes of (Forced) Migration" embarks on a journey to explore the complex and mul)faceted experiences of migratory movements. It aims to transcend traditional norms of representation and the oversimplification of binary perspectives on migration by presenting ten non-fiction films that span various geographical regions, including Europe, North America, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia to illuminate global narratives of both humans and non-humans. The program highlights the journeys, struggles, triumphs and resilience of individuals and communities as they navigate different regions, borders, cultures, and identities to facilitate a deeper understanding of the myriad contexts of migration and transformative dialogue.

Selected works do not treat migratory movements as isolated events in a static world but as ongoing, recurring processes in an inherently dynamic and ever-changing world. In doing so, they bring the geographical, cultural, and physical distances between lands, countries, and bodies into focus, making them transparent, negotiable, and visible with the capacities, strategies, and tactics of the moving image art.

In this context, with this curated programme, we invite viewers to rethink migration as a performative aspect of our shared culture that already goes beyond a dualistic understanding of the world and the diverse forms of mobilities in it and explore the works embodying strong ethical, aesthetical, and political stances and positionings.

The exhibition and accompanying program take place in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Integration and Migration Research (InZentIM) at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The exhibition is funded by the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research with support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Gerhard Mercator Graduate School, University of Duisburg-Essen.

All movies are accompanied by English subtitles.
