There is now considerable agreement in studies of global politics that the international liberal order is in crisis. In this workshop, we take the diagnosis of crisis as an invitation for a broader reconsideration of the analytical toolbox with which international order has been analysed in the past. We propose an alternative approach of world ordering from the margins that emphasizes epistemic, praxeological and symbolic dimensions of world ordering as key factors in situations of high uncertainty and complexity. We aim at using this approach to also capture the meaning-making aspect of world order conceptions, of which only a small section has been influential in shaping the existing world order, while others have had less influence but contain important alternative perspectives that should be explored. We ask which alternative visions of world order are proposed by actors who are located on the margins of world politics in its various dimensions and explore the forms of circulation, appropriation and translation at play.
