The recent record of cooperation within the international community is rather bleak. This assessment seems to be common amidst the crisis of global climate change negotiations or political rifts within the United Nations Security Council.
To examine examples of successful cooperation was therefore the aim of the workshop in Duisburg organised by Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research. Based on a study conducted among roughly 100 carefully selected individuals deeply familiar with global cooperation (research) that was carried out by Dr. Andrea Licata, former associate researcher at the Centre, the workshop "Examples of Successful Cooperation (2)" concentrated on the new media. The workshop thereby continued the innovative approach of the predecessor workshop on "Examples of Successful Cooperation (1) - Artistic Practice and Improvisation" in August 2012.
On the first day the focus lied on the example of Wikipedia that was presented by the American communication scientist and author of the book Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia Joseph Reagle. In the ensuing discussion among the participants in particular the question of the possible transferability of the case (with the help of wiki-software) on other areas of international cooperation was raised. On the second workshop day the concept of transparency was the central issue. Often regarded as a prerequisite for successful cooperation, the concept of transparency was addressed and discussed in the contributions "Wikileaks and transparency" and "Facebook and transparency."
The workshop was moderated by Prof. Claus Leggewie, Co-director of the Centre, and Prof. Christoph Bieber, Institute of Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
