Convivialism: A Debate

Essen – 6 October 2015

The model of the homo oeconomicus does not help to tackle the present challenges of violence, inequality and the ongoing destruction of the planet. Therefore, what is needed is an alternative model of thought, based on a different anthropology which recognizes the 'interdependence' of men, i.e. his need of care and his capacity for cooperation.

This was the shared conviction that led to the Convivialist Manifesto, launched in 2013 by a group of French and international intellectuals, who set out to formulate the common denominator of the thousands of movements committed to 'another world'. In 2014, the English translation of the Manifesto by Margaret Clarke was published in the Global Dialogue Series of the Centre for Global Cooperation Research. The German translation by Eva Moldenhauer, edited by Claus Leggewie and Frank Adloff, appeared with the publisher transcript.

The volume 'Konvivialismus. Eine Debatte' ('Convivialism. A debate'), edited by Volker Heins and Frank Adloff, opens the debate about the potentials and limits of the manifesto. Do we even need another 'manifesto' or a new “ism”? What to think about the diagnoses made by the manifesto and what about its proposed solutions? These and other questions were discussed during the book launch on 6 October at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities. Volker Heins, Claus Leggewie, Britta Acksel and Henrike Knappe engaged with a lively audience, including academics, contributors to the edited volume and citizens from the area.
