Research Project at the Centre
Alternative Perspectives on Cooperation: Construction and Mobility of Ideas and Practices in Conflict
The project moves beyond the state centric discourse on Cooperation to explore alternative ways of understanding global cooperation. In doing so, I examine how the practices and ideas of resistance are shaped and circulated. Here, I look at specific ways in which certain practices such as stone pelting, slogan making, resistance poetry, graffiti are circulated and in what manner they shape norms of behaviour in resistance. Within the framework of construction and mobility of ideas in resistance, gender is a useful category to analyse how the masculine and feminine identities are shaped and reproduced in the resistance movements. The study will look into how similar forms of women’s agency are reproduced in both Palestine and Kashmir. In both these conflict spaces, women help in reclaiming masculinity of men by deploying their femininity in a manner that celebrates militant masculine values. For instance, women have used the motherhood discourse to glorify and encourage notions of martyrdom. In foregrounding conflict resistance and cooperation among such movements, this work makes a radical departure from our common sensical understandings of global cooperation. One of the central objectives of this project is to think through ways in which resistance movements contribute to the development of common ethics and practices. In focussing specifically on the practice, and finding the meanings embedded within them, this work attempts to make an important theoretical intervention in debates about global cooperation.
