Research Project at the Centre

Internet governance and data issues: future paths of cooperation mechanisms?

This proposal seeks to address the state-of-play and the possibilities for cooperation in polycentric Internet governance in the age of big data and AI. Are governance processes related with data governance adopting more hierarchical forms of governance and eventually pose risks to the fragile democratization of Internet governance? Is polycentric Internet governance being challenged by emerging AI governance arrangements and AI ‘super powers’ (both states and companies)? How are these discussions affecting the core institutions, players and equilibrium of the Internet governance complex? Will the effect of AI and data business models devalue the governance capacity of stakeholders and nations from developing contexts?
