Dr David Shim joined the research group 'Legitimation and delegitimation in global cooperation' in September 2021 and will be a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre until August 2022.

Visual Narratives of Climate Change – Exploring Climate Storytelling of Fridays for Future

This research project examines the visual politics of legitimation of transnational environmental movements fighting climate change. It does so by exploring the ways narratives about climate change are conveyed visually. I will investigate how visual narratives are central to, and productive of, strategies of legitimation in the contentious politics of climate change. The goal is to show how visual narratives of climate change enhance the legitimacy of political claims thus promoting cooperation of various actors at multiple sites. The project will focus on Fridays for Future (FFF) – a recent, transnational protest phenomenon, which, like no other climate movement before, has been highly successful in mobilizing people around the world to combat global climate change.

• Mediatisation of war. This project examines Germany as a special case for critical Military/Security Studies: German Armed Forces and the gendered mediatisation of war on Facebook, Militarized masculinities in recruitment videos of the German Armed Forces and Gendered Representation of Military Service in Die Rekruten (with Frank Stengel).

• Visualizing Korea. A joint project with Roland Bleiker and David Chapman (University of Queensland), which examines how visual representations have shaped changing notions of Korean society, culture and nationhood. A Special Issue appeared in Asian Studies Review and features a contribution of mine on the ‘Cinematic Representations of the Gwangju Uprising: Visualising the “new” South Korea in A Taxi Driver’.

• Global politics of remote sensing. This work asks how satellite vision relates to current geopolitical practice and how it shapes our understanding of places, spaces and sites: Politics of satellite activism (with Delf Rothe, Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy), Satellite vision and geographical imagination, Satellites and political conflict.
