Assessing the Performative Effect of the NIEO Ideology on Contemporary Projects of South-South Cooperation, With Particular Reference to the BRICS

Advanced by developing countries in the 1970s, calls for the establishment of a New International Economic Order (NIEO) represent a favorite terrain of historical investigation for scholars interested in global political economy. Michele's study aims to draw a connection between past and present by analysing the enduring relevance of the NIEO project from a performative standpoint. For that purpose, it proceeds along two investigative lines. First, it asks whether the NIEO ideology influences contemporary patterns of South-South economic cooperation—with particular reference to the initiatives undertaken by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in the context of the BRICS group. Secondly, it considers the way in which some states from the Global North systematically oppose certain projects of South-South cooperation. This latter strand seeks to determine whether such an opposition is dictated by perceiving the NIEO ideology as an enduring threat to political arrangements benefiting the Global North.
