Grasping Horizons of Possibility: Narratives about International Futures
Descriptions of the contemporary international situation are imbued with a rethoric of crisis in stark contrast, for instance, to narratives of tremendous opportunity after 1990 ('new world order'). Both imaginations of horizons of future possibility are obviously linked to whatever future materializes (as actuality). The research project will examine the linguistic conditioning of possibilitarian imagination against the background of pragmatist thought (Rorty, Wittgenstein). It will explore the potential applications of possibilistic imagination in line with Rawl's 'realistic utopias' in the field of European security.
