Research Project at the Centre
Within the EU-ASEAN cross-border regionalism: cooperation with(out) an ethical cross-border governance? A comparative perspective analysis
The project will elaborate a comparative (sub)regional integration framework in an effort to compare and understand sub-regional integration processes through the analysis of governance at the micro-level. Thus, this research focuses on micro border-regions in the EU and ASEAN regional areas since border regions provide a rich empirical and policy context for understanding regional integration through a process of deterritorialisation-reterritorialisation of capital and politics.
The main argument of the project is the need to focus on ‘ethical’ issues in order to promote ‘good’ governance and to answer the general question of whether and to what extent ‘governance’ translates into development understood in the present research as justice and fulfilment of obligations.
Thus this research attempts to infuse regional integration theories with ethical considerations from the notion of ‘obligation’ as conceptualized by the philosopher S. Weil. This research starts from the assumption that integration through governance is not a merely engine for wealth creation, but is the process that provides the means for pursuing justice through equal redistribution, and develops authentically human social relationships of solidarity, trust and reciprocity.
Aims of the project:
- to compare regional integration modes that appear to be disconnected and diverse in order to verify whether they can be manifestation of a more general and relatively simple structure and produce similar outcomes;
- to study governance worldwide through border regions;
- to elaborate a 'governance regional integration’ model infused with ethics to build an analytical-interpretive framework for issues of border regions development.
