Research Project at the Centre

African Regionalism

Even before their independance, the African countries held a number of meetings in order to set up different international organisations. Initially, these institutions aimed at strengthening the political decolonisation of the continent and promoting the cooperation among the members states. But since 1990, the continent is facing new challenges: poverty, HIV/AIDS, ethnic conflicts, political crisis, the quest of democracy. Then the question is to what extend these organisations are going to tackle these new problems. Will they be able to change their nature or to find ways to deal with these question? The outcome of this study is to lead to a publication of a book. African regionalism is taught in some West African universities in French speaking countries but there is no manual available in this discipline.
