T.G. Ash receives the “Médaille Charlemagne pour les Médias Européens”

05.03.2013 Timothy Garton Ash is this year’s winner of the “Karlsmedaille” for European Media. The jury’s choice signifies a recognition for Professor Ash’s passionate and enduring plea for European integration. The Professor of European Studies at the University of Oxford is one of the most highly-regarded experts in Eastern European history and politics. The jury stresses the fact that the awardee uses the fact that he is well-known to promote European development, with a focus on the younger generation, with the historian’s deeply felt conviction that this is “the best Europe we ever had”. In the first Käte Hamburger Lecture about one year ago in Essen, he addressed another important issue he is passionate about: “Can (and should) there be global norms for freedom of expression?”

There the convinced European proved to be a truly global netizen. Ash has already initiated a global platform for free speech here: http://freespeechdebate.com.  The award ceremony in Aachen will take place on 2 May.
