Improving the EU’s Capabilities to Prevent Mass Atrocities

19.11.2012 In cooperation with the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) Berlin and the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities, the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) organised on the 19th November 2012 a workshop to discuss the current draft report of the Task Force on the EU Prevention of Mass Atrocities.

The Task Force was founded in 2012 with the aim of delivering a report, on the basis of existing EU documents, expert interviews and analysis of best practices, that demonstrates the necessity of European action against war atrocities and genocide.

30 experts from science, politics, administration and civil society participated and made important contribution to advance the report. The focal point of the discussion has been the recommendations of action that shall be formulated for political decision makers as well as the relevance of the issue in the light of the developments in Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The workshop was led by Barbara Lippert (Director of Research of SWP), Tobias Debiel (Director of INEF and the Centre), and Gyorgy Tatár (Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities). The report shall be presented next year, including proposals for the engagement of the EU to prevent mass atrocities and genocide.
