PD Dr. Christian Meyer joined Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research as a Senior Fellow. He conducted his research in Research Unit 2 “Global Cultural Conflicts and Transcultural Cooperation” from October 2012 to July 2013.

Research Interests

  • The anthropological bases, the cultural shaping, and the boundaries of cooperative social practices
  • Changes in the forms and modalities of social interaction caused by globalization, artificial intelligence and dementia
  • Intercorporeality and embodiment in collaborative situated activities (such as sports, work, everday life, religion, scientific practice)
  • Local appropriations and vernacularizations of global discourses about the "good life" in Senegal and beyond
  • Hybridity, creativity and improvisation in Afro-Brazilian cultures and beyond

Current Projects

  • Communication under Pressure: Intercorporeality and situated practice in sports (funded by the DFG); together with Joerg Bergmann and Ulrich v. Wedelstaedt
  • Microdynamics of political communication in world society: the social life of democracy in two Islamic states (Bangladesh and Senegal (funded by the DFG); together with Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka, Eva Gerharz and Sambalaye Diop
  • Information and data infrastructure. Project in the SFB 882 "From heterogeneity to inequality" (funded by the DFG); together with Stefan Liebig and Johanna Vompras
  • Doing social research: an ethnography of scientific practice (funded by the Presidential Office of the University of Bielefeld); together with Christian Meier zu Verl
