19.01.2017 Claus Leggewie was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) by Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft. In a ceremony held at the Museum ‘Kunstpalast’ in Düsseldorf, the Prime Minister honored Leggewie as ‘one of the most prestigious intellectual heads of our state and one of our most important thinkers’. This year’s order has been received by 26 citizens as an outstanding award from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to pay tribute to their long-term commitment and achievements.

In her laudatory speech, Prime Minister Kraft expressed her gratitude for Leggewie, ‘setting his research focus especially here in NRW’. In his role as initiator and co-director of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg/Centre for Global Cooperation Research in Duisburg and as director of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen, she appreciated Leggewie’s contributions as an enrichment for the science country NRW. ‘You are a figure head for NRW as a country of the arts and social sciences’, Kraft said.

The Order of Merit was donated in March 1986 on the occasion of the 40th birthday of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is awarded to citizens as a recognition of their extraordinary merit for the community.
