Applications open for Summer University 'Constitution-Building in Africa'

After history has seen several waves of constitution-building in the 20th century, the world is witnessing another wave of constitution-building, this time predominately in Africa. This burst of activity has given rise to a range of new ideas about the nature and purpose of constitutions and constitution-making, constitutional solutions to contemporary problems, and the proper role of international actors. The course will address the subject from four different angles, all of them related to specific challenges in Africa to offer new insights on a classic subject of the highest academic and practical relevance.

Organizing the event, the three course directors Markus Böckenförde (Centre for Global Cooperation Research, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany), Gedion Hessebon (School of Law, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia) and Renata Uitz (Comparative Constitutional Law Program, Department of Legal Studies, CEU) brought together highly experienced specialists not only in constitutional law but also with practical experiences in Africa:

Horace S Adjolohoun, African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, Arusha, Tanzania
Jill Cottrell, Katiba Institut, Nairobi, Kenya
Yash Ghai, University of Hong Kong

H. Kwasi Prempeh, Ghana Center for Democratic Development, Accra, Ghana
