Call for Applications - Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m/f/d)

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg/Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21) invites applications for a full-time 12-month Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to begin 1^st December 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The postdoctoral fellow is invited to contribute to collaborative survey research on the social legitimacy of global governance institutions (GGIs). More specifically, we invite applications with a special focus on how the perceived inclusion of nonstate actors may shape citizen beliefs in the legitimacy of GGIs.

Desired Qualifications

• Exceptional, completed doctoral degree
• Strong familiarity with literature on social legitimacy and processes of (de)legitimation of global governance institutions
• Excellent skills in quantitative methods (preferably including the design of surveys and survey experiments)
• Experience in collaborative research
• Proficiency in written and spoken English

We particularly encourage female researchers and scholars from the Global South to apply. Applications from scholars at risk are also welcome.

The KHK/GCR21

The Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen is one of the Käte Hamburger Kollegs sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Established in 2012, the Centre is an interdisciplinary and international learning community that seeks to enhance understanding of the possibilities and limits of global cooperation and to explore new options for global public policy. The working language at the Centre is English. In the second half of its funding period (2018-2024), the KHK/GCR21 is addressing "Legitimation and Delegitimation in Global Cooperation" as one of its thematic fields of research.

Expectations from Fellows

• A firm commitment to contribute to collective survey research activities (including data generation, analysis, and publication)
• Regular active participation in the Centre’s research colloquium, monthly research group meetings, and other Centre events

• Willingness to work remotely but also join group meetings at the Centre in Duisburg, Germany, or with research partners elsewhere

How to Apply

Applications (in English only) should include:

• Cover letter clarifying the preferred start and end date of the fellowship
• Concise research proposal for an individual research project on citizen legitimacy beliefs toward global governance institutions (GGIs) and with a special focus on how the perceived inclusion of nonstate actors may shape citizen beliefs in the legitimacy of GGIs. The proposal should be 2-3 pages in length, including bibliography and references
