Building on a recently published special issue of its Quarterly Magazine, the Centre for Global Cooperation Research invites you to an online debate about unity and diversity in the global internet. Leading commentators from around the world on this issue develop contrasting arguments on: (1) what do ‘integration’ and ‘fragmentation’ of the internet mean; (2) why are unity and/or diversity in the global internet desirable (or not); and (3) what does the future bode as regards a unified or diversified global internet?
Dr Tatiana Tropina is Assistant Professor in cybersecurity governance at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Leiden University and an Associate Fellow of The Hague Program on International Cyber Security. Previously, she worked as a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany. A lawyer by education, for the last 15 years she has been engaged in academic research, policy, and advocacy in the field of cybercrime, cybersecurity, ICT regulation, and Internet governance.
Admire Mare is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. His research interests include analyzing the intersection between technology and society, digital journalism, social media and politics, media and democracy and political communication. He currently leads the international research project Social Media, Misinformation and Elections in Kenya and Zimbabwe (SoMeKeZi) funded by the Social Science Research Council (2019–2023).
Riccardo Nanni is researcher in data governance at Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento, Italy. He holds a PhD in International Relations with a thesis on the influence of Chinese stakeholders in Internet governance and is active in the Internet Governance Forum and the Global Internet Governance Academic Network.
Elena Plexida is Vice President for Government and IGO Engagement at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Prior to joining ICANN, Elena worked for the European Commission DG CONNECT on Internet governance issues. Before that, she was a telecom attaché with the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union. During the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU, Elena co-chaired the Council Working Party on Telecommunications and Information Society..
